I have a 98 Mustang GT. It has the 4.6l V8. Last year about this time the car started to show symptoms. Running hot, miss firing under a load, and no power. Took it to a Ford Dealership for a full diagonostic test. The technicians said my fuel pump is going out. Instead of paying $1000 for what they quoted me, I got the pump for $250 brand new and had my older brother install it for me. He is a certified mechanic, graduate from UTI. So the fuel pump did not fix the problem. Had to take it back to Ford, paid an extra $50 for a retest and guess what? They found more problems the second time around. Sludge built up on the throttle body, bad spark plugs and wires. Well I cleaned the throttle body myself and installed new wires and plugs. This seemed to fix the problem, but only temperary. The car started to miss fire again. Later on that day it shot a plug out of cylinder 3. Luckily did not strip out threads, put plug back in. Installed new exhaust system, O/R x pipe. It shot a plug again a month later of installing the exhaust. same cylinder.(3) Took it to a local mechanic shop. Had the shop install a heli coil. They drilled it too deep into the head, causing me to replace the whole passenger side cylinder head. Had a family friend mechanic do the work on the car. Replaced all gaskets and did timing chains. Got the car back one month ago and started to miss fire again recently. Current symptoms: idles high when cold, about 1100 rpm, back fires on deceleration when cold(coasting down hills in 2nd gear.) miss fires under acceleration, any gear, any rpm. little power. If you have any idea of causes or posible fixes, please let me know. Thank You!
