gear wear pattern

gear wear pattern
Well i'm still in the process of rebuilding my rear end. My question is when checking the gear wear pattern, is it mostly affected by the pinion depth or by how much backlash I have. I can seem to find the correct pinion depth for my ford production gear set still, and i'm wonding if I can just figure it out by the gear wear pattern. Thanks guy.
