Default Newbie needs some help!

I bought my first Mustang last week, a '96 GT convertible. The rear tires were worn out so when I felt a vibration above 50mph I figured it was the tires. Bought 4 new tires today and jumped on the interstate. I have a major vibration between 60 and 70. It's there above and below but seems maybe just a little less severe.

Anyone have an idea where to start? I'm now sure it's not the tires and I assume the wheels are OK because they balanced them and should have seen a problem wheel when they balanced them.

That;s what I was thinking - maybe unbalanced. The car supposedly sat for several years. Any chance it could be the u-joints being wiped out for some reason?

Figured maybe there was something that's common to these cars to help me narrow it down.

Jeff - did it feel like a wheel very out of balance or an out of round wheel? I feel it in the body and seats.

If you are only noticing it at higher speeds, such as 50 and up, I would say your wheels need balanced, I would almost guarantee that's it. Also, checked that your wheels are torqued on good.

+1 on making sure the wheels are balanced...My vibration started at about 45 and got worse the faster I went..
And yes it was shaking really bad in the car...

If it didn't do it before the tires were put on then its most likely an out of balance tire. I've had slightly out of balance tires that would shake between 50-65 but run smooth both below and above that speed.

If the vibration is over a specific speed, its most likley ur balance on ur tires are off. Take it back to the shop and tell them ur getting vibration at hight speeds. They will recheck ur balance. Its possible it messed up
