Default Washed my engine, now runs horrible (sound clip included)

So I washed out the engine of my 01 GT with some simple green and a light water spray about 24 hours ago. I covered the CAI, alternator and fuse box, and while it now looks great I obviously got water into something and now its fudged.

It's making a "chugging" sound (almost sounds like its cammed or something). It doesnt happen when the engine is cold at idle, but once its warmed up or you take it for a drive, its sounds and performs like butt. Loss of horsepower, torque, and sputters. There is no check engine light on either.

So maybe water got into one or more of the coil over plugs or spark plug wires? I dunno, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's a sound clip link at idle then a little acceleration.

Pull the coil packs and dry them off. Your spark plugs are wet. Do not pull the plugs just take a towel and try to dry them. take off the coil packs and let them dry. You may need new boots.

It is probably the last one on the passengers side thats missing the most.

Hope this helps and let me know if it worked.

I cannot see the video for some reason, but i'm willing to bet that you blew a COP or several of them.

I did the same exact thing last month and my car had the same symptoms. I ended up buying 8 new COP's for $90 brand new lifetime warranty!! I got them through a seller on Ebay. Look into the COP sticky thread in the top of the 4.6 section.

goodluck, but chances are you will be buying 8 new COP's...

EDIT - but pull off the COP's and look into the spark plug wells and see if there is water on top. Usually the COP's are sealed nicely so no water will get into the spark plugs. But the same exact thing happened to me and i didn't have a CEL on and it ended up being the coil on plugs..

No I didnt, I didnt read that I was supposed to anywhere. Some people said to cover the battery, others said it really didnt matter.

But thanks for the replies so far, I'll go out and check the coil plugs in a bit.

It has been covered. I believe 99 GT Vert made a sticky about it...

IMO, just grab a cloth and some cleaner and go at it. i will never put running water onto my engine ever again

Ya we really need to make that thread about how to clean an engine bay a sticky.

OP, you forgot to cover the coilplugs (which is the most common place people get the water). You need to take them out and pull them apart and dry them along with where the plugs go. Don't drive it around and let it evaporate. Dry it out!
