Default Problem with car lunging during acceleration

I have a 2001 mustang gt automatic with around 79,000 miles and have developed a strange issue this week. During steady acceleration from about 40 mph to around 50 and especially if you try to accelerate from 55 to 60 on the highway, the car will lunge and sputter. No warning lights have come up and I have done a tune up with new plugs gapped correctly less than 4 months ago. I was wondering if anyone on here has had a similar problem or insight with these cars to help me figure out what I need to do to fix it. I have never had this issue before, my thought is that it might be bad gas and could be time to clean the injectors.

probably a misfire caused by a bad or poorly seated cop. pull your cops off and make sure theres no water/coolant in your spark plug wells, then ohm out your cops with a handheld DMM, or swap cops real quick with someone else who has a gt.

^^^what he said, also look for a cracked cop boot. it could be a clogged cat 2 that could cause your problems. if the cop is the culprit go to a do it urself junk yard and pull a cop from another 4.6 engine if ur looking for a cheap fix.

Default Update

New fuel filter in today, I had only had the car for six months and actually found out it had the original fuel filter... some people are idiots. So I'm guessing that was the main issue. I checked my plugs and coils and nothing was out of the ordinary. The problem is still there, just stumbling under normal acceleration. The car is fine when I get in on it hard so I'm thinking some of the dirt and water from the fuel is gumming up the injectors and staying in the system. Going to try some lucas fuel injector cleaner tomorrow and see if that helps the situation.

just cuz the cops look fine doesnt mean they are. they are a frequent cause of misfires on our cars

The ignition doesnt seem like the culprit because it does idle perfect and when I'm flooring it is still fine, just normal acceleration. When its not under load everything sounds completely normal no matter what the rpm. Its just between 35 and 60 on normal acceleration, so it seems like if I had a coil going, it would effect the entire powerband. It seems like the injectors now, especially after looking at what came out of the fuel filter.

Sounds like a coil to me. they mostly misfire under a load as you discribe. have a dealer do a powerbalance test or check mode 6 data with a scan tool to pinpoint the misfiring cylinder..
