Its because ur brake fluid is reading low. The right fix is new brake pads, THEN top the fluid off... But...if u just top off the fluid it'll be fine, and that light will go away

Seriously?!?! Low brake fluid is the cause of this? Man that stupid light is always on when I stop fast even after I installed new pads on all four. Least it will be an easy fix

The brake fluid is the culprit? I don't think I need new pads anyway... Although I get TONS of brake dust on my wheels and my brakes squeak

thinner pads means more travel for the piston in the brake caliper which takes more brake fluid to push it the right distance for the right pressure. new pads means less travel for the piston and less fluid needed to supply pressure to stop the car. if you have new pads that means you are probably really low on fluid. and if your brakes are squeaking you might need new pads, brakes shouldnt squeak unless they need replacing or are wet (and if wet the squeak goes away after they get warm).
