Traction control does default to on whenever you shut the car off. However, a lot of experienced drivers prefer TC to be off regardless. You get to know how your car handles in all weather conditions without the interference of the computer.

Stupid question alert.....
Can't you turn traction control off manually (button) when you start your car? I know it defaults back when you turn it off, but is this just for the convenience? I'd almost rather have it at my controls rather than have to go through the tune if it's raining out.

The device (XCal 2 or Predator) used to deliver the tune doesn't matter. The most important thing is the quality of the tune itself. The XCal 2 has the ability to hold up to 4 tunes internally, one of which is your stock tune and the other three being performance tunes. The Predator holds one performance tune and your stock tune. You can also store tunes on your computer and download them into either tuner. I know the Predator allows the user to adjust the performance tune and the stock tune, XCal 2 owners can report whether that tuner will do the same. Both feature datalogging capability, with the XCal 2 having a better capability in that respect than the Predator from what I have seen. Used Predators are relatively inexpensive compared to either a new Predator or XCal 2, and perform just as well as a new units. Personally I think either is a good investment.

They come pre-loaded with a performance tune that you can easily download into your vehicle's computer via the OBD II diagnostic port. If you want to make changes to the tune or have several performance mods then seriously consider going to a dyno. You can also get a custom tune for your vehicle in person or by email from an SCT or Diablo dealer, and both require some dyno information and datalogging (which can be done by the flash tuner) to adjust the tune for maximum HP. TQ, and safety (as in A/F ratio). I would estimate 10-15 HP gains from going with one of the pre-loaded performance tunes that require premium gas. Remember that a flash tuner can also adjust your speedometer and odometer following a gear change and read/clear trouble codes, making it a worthwhile investment for many.

Yeah I know how that is...I have an '89 IROC-Z that has the suspension all modded out- basically it's a harsh ride but handles like an F1 car and make it interesting to drive in the rain.
