Default rear end noise

Hey MF,

I haven't been on in a while but I have a question for you guys. It seems that there is some noise coming from the rear of my mustang. It sounds like a rotating noise, not a clanking or banging noise. I talked to one shop and they said its probably my bearings that need to be replaced. The car has some 95,000 miles on it. I was looking for a second opinion from you guys. I am sure he is right, but he didn't test drive it, just went off of what I was saying. How much do you think it would cost? He was saying around 8-900. If it is the bearings then where are they located? Is it in my differential? If it is in there, it would be a good time to swap gears out right? This might be jumbled so let me know if it is hard to understand or confusing. Thanks again.

Cliff notes:
What is the noise?
Where is it located?
How much does it cost to replace/install?

I also had a rotating noise coming from my rear along with a little skipping on turns. My bearings were completely shot. I decided to get the FRPP 31 spline lsd, moser 31 spline axles, FRPP 4.10 gears, Motive bearing kit, and a new diff cover. Parts cost around $850 and the labor was around $450. so $1300 all said and done. I just got it back today so I'm still babying it around to make sure everything is installed properly and there are no problems.

Could be axle bearings, carrier bearings, pinion bearings..

If its axe bearings, its not gonna cost you that much $$, but anything else, you might as well buy some gears while your in there

Update:

it is indeed my bearings, about 750 for parts and install. Another 300 for gears and install. Is it worth upgrading to the frpp 31 spline lsd and axle? The guy at the shop said it wasn't and I have gone to this shop many times before. My other question is in regards to the gears. Is frpp that much better than motive performance in relation to durability and noise?

Quesions:
is 31 spline that much better than 28?

Motive or frpp?

Thanks guys

if you go to a 31 spline you will also need new 31 spline axles
