Smelly Transmission
So the other day I was eating at the cheesecake factory and it started snowing. It was sunday, and the good old state of CT didn't want to pay it's employees double time so needless to say the roads were COVERED in snow.
I had to drive home... and my road where my house is is a big hill. Like a champ, I made it to the top... however, my car has no sandbags in the back and it was very difficult. I STARTED MOVING IN 4TH GEAR multiple times, then quickly shifted into 3rd once I got traction, then 2nd etc.. I did this quite a few times, and my car was "going 40mph" when I was really only going abouty 3mph up the hill, if that. I kept the RPMs no higher than 3k on a fully warm engine.
I'm just wondering... what exactly is happening to your transmission when you are doing that? Does it think you are really driving that fast? Because when I got out of my car I smelled a burning rubber kind of smell. It lasted about 1/2 a minute then went away. Is this because I was going too slow for 4th gear?
What happens when you are in a gear that is too high for the speed you are going? This has always been a question in my mind, because I travel a lot on a particular road for quite a ways, where I put the car into 5th and hover right at 1500RPMS to get the best gas mileage... and sometimes if you dip to 1400, the car gets a little mad.

i drove up to loon mtn sat in the middle of the storm. it was awesome!!! didn't drive the stang because of the plethera of other cars available. parents are away for a month so ya. but that smell you were smelling was your clutch telling you to f*ck off. it was slipping like crazy. fourth gear starts??? why??? feather it in first or second.
