tire question

If it is the 8" width 17" diameter wheel the stock size is 245/45/17.
You can run 275/40/17 in the rear. For some reason people on this forum think this is dangerous but I and others have been running that size for a while. Looks a lot better from the back end too.

The 275s just bulge a little. Other than that no problems here either.

A 275/40 is oversized for an 8" wheel. Just because one hasn't had problems or lots of people do it, does not make it right. If you want to run a wider tire, do it properly with the correct size wheel.
See Choosing a new tire thread in my sig to see why it is not a good idea.

Since they say that, I'm led to believe that these are in fact "safe". They wouldn't give it as an option if it weren't. That would be a law suit for sure if anyone bought them, mounted them (or an even better law suit would be if you bought 17x8" wheels with 275/40 tires and had DCTD mount them) and got hurt in any direct way from this. Sorry, I believe them to be "safe" on an 8" wheel.

Functional = yes...safe = not always. There's a fine line here. One thing to consider is that sizes vary between different brands. For example Nitto dr's run very narrow compared to say BFG's.
I don't care who says what really. I would never go higher than a 255 on a 8" rim personally. The only exception i might "possibly" make is a 275 Nitto dr. Even then you won't get the best characteristics out of the tire. All you have to do is look at the average 275 tire, and you can see how bad it bulges on a 8" rim. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it isn't an optimal fit.
