"1" locks it in 1st gear (won't upshift) and "2" locks it in 2nd (won't upshift or downshift). Don't worry about those two, just put in "D" and go.

Not quite. If you put it on the 1, it will stay in first till redline, then shift. Second is the same way. I think that it boosts line pressure too.

Becuase I don't know I have to ask. Are you saying that the trans will shift from 1st into 2nd and then "D" by itself once the redline is reached? I would like to know this from a racing stand point. Do most people start in 1 and shift up, start in "D" and just go, or start with the OD off and turn the OD on when higher RPMs are reached? I would like to know how you guys shift or not, an auto trans while running the 1/4 mile.

Thanks

On mine, leaving it in a certain gear only allows you to go to that certain gear, but always starts at "1"

Lets say its in "1", then it will be in 1 and only 1. Will not up****

If its in "2", tranny will start in first gear, then shift to second but not go higher than second. And etc.........

If i'm racing from a dig, then I usually just leave it in drive, because it will shift fine. But from a roll, i put it into "2" because I don't want to have to step on the gas and waste time downshifting once the race has already started.

Just put it in "D" to see how it shifts. If you want to shift it like a manual, then you can start off in "1" shift to "2" at 5200-5500 rpm, then put it in "D". If it has trac control, you will want that off as well.

You sure? Have you modified your shift points or something? On every automatic I have ever driven, including two Mark VIII's with the same tranny as the mustang, have shifted at redline out of 1 on the gear selector.... It's a safety feature as far as I know.
