I have a probllem with my 2001 GT 4.6
When cold it will start up. Drive it to work shut it off Try to start just clicks. Go out at lunch starts up.Drive it home for lunch,shut it off try to start immediatly just a click.I am car savy. Work on them all the time.Side job, but this one has me stumped. Replaced alt ,the starter,the battery terminals, checked and charged the battery.Jumped the starter terminal.The new alt is below specs ,but I do not hink this is the problem. Anyone else have this issue?

Did you check the fuse? Not sure if that could even be the prob but some times we over look the small things. Wish I had more for you, good luck.

On topic now. Have you tried the ignition switch? If it's a 5 speed, it could be the clutch pedal sensor. Seems like you covered all the bases with the starter, almost sounds like the solenoid, but I would assume that the new one came with one.

The car is an automatic. I even tried hooking power directly to the starter from another battery,hit the key and all i could here is the solenoid.The new alt is only putting out 12 volts so I'm taking it back this morning to have the store check it.I was thiinking it could be a short somewhere or a relay.Is there a relay for the solenoid or starter.I know the solenoid actually acts as a relay.I was also going to try and jump the ignition switch.The only thing that gets me is that it will usually start cold,but not after ithas run awhile.

Turns out the new alt i installed was bad.Got abrand new one this AM and starts like a charm.Must have been shorted. Thanks for the replies.
