Default Fuel Delivery Problem

Try to make this as short as possible. I was just cruising, not racing or even pushing it. Car started sputtering, dieing if I let it idle, and suddenly just didn't run well. Fuel pressure guage read 0 even though the car was still running and even after it died I was able to turn it over again. That was a couple days ago, when I tried to turn over today, nothing.

I am guessing it's the fuel pump but any other ideas would help, thanks all.

I agree if you have a fuel pressure gauge and no pressure the pump is very likely.

When you turn the key one position before cranking do you hear the fuel pump? Also have somebody hit the fuel tank with a hammer while you're cranking the car and if it starts you have a bad pump.

i have never heard of somebody hitting the tank with a hammer. if you have a mechanical fuel pressure gauge, and it says 0 with the key on, then the pump is not coming on. could be from a bad fuel pump relay, loose connection, or just a bad pump

I know it sounds like a hillbilly thing to do but it works just like it does with a bad starter.

Thanks, I was a bit confused as to how the car kept running if the fuel pump died that's why I thought it could be something else. Also, would it be smart to try and replace the fuel pump myself, the most I've done before was a couple simple boltons.

Its a very straightfoward job I'm sure there's online articles with pics for every step on how to do it. The only tool you need that isn't basic is the fuel line disconnect tool and buy a new fuel filter while youre working there.

Well My fuel pump just went out
but mine was acting diff. then yours
Mine would run fine for the first couple minutes
then after like 2 min, when i would press the gas and get passed 2000 RPMS it would kick back, it never died on me, and ran as long as i didnt floor it.

I changed the spark plugs, nothing happend really (except once i got it fixed it shifted smoother)

I changed the fuel filter, it did absolutley nothin

THis is what i did
I drove my car and when it started acting funny, i pulled over and turned it off. then turned the key (not start it) and leave the key on for 5 sec, and did this a total of 3 times, (letting fuel run into your pump =]) then i started my car and floored it! and it ran perfect! for about 1 minute lol.then started acting funny again

So i went and got a new fuel pump and shoo nuff!! now it runs like a brand new car!!!!! =]

its pretty nice, except my car is just one problem after another

My brake line is leaking now! =/

hope this helps

Just a quick update.

I checked the fuel pump fuse just to rule a short out and it was fine. I tried to turn it over and I noticed the fuel pressure guage was jumping up when I did. Don't know if that's normal or a hint that something other than the fuel pump went out. Like I said I'm not that mechanicly inclined so any more advice would be a big help before I try to perform any surgery on her. I had to replace the pump anyway since I'm going to put on a smaller pulley. Don't know if any dual pumps fit in the stock gas tank..will do some more research. Thanks again.
