Rear End Help

Hello,

I have a 2000 Mustang Gt Convert

I am currently rebuilding the rear-end and this is my first rear end. I understand tools and can rebuild engines.

I have looked around and found a few good How-To articles but they all show rebuilding the rear-end using the Ford tool to measure pinion depth,

Is there any good articles with pictures that don't use this tool?
Haynes manual?
Can you rent the Ford tool or tool like it?

What are you guys using, (basically Im looking for a picture of like where your putting the tool and how you measured the depth)

Thanks for the help

Well, if you are using FRPP gears, I'd go ahead and tell you to re-use the stock shims and seee how it fits. 88% of the time you can get away with it

Fantastic write up!

It addresses your question about how to measure pinion depth. No really "special" tools needed.

Thanks for the responses, that is a pretty good write up

Ok couples things, I didn't mark the bearing caps of the driveshaft, will I be able to tell which side is what on the bearing caps?

I am installing all new bearings, ring/pinion, T-loc diff

Examine the mating surfaces of the caps closely, usually there is some sort of stain or compression pattern that will match up...\

Next time mark 'em, I use a center punch and place matching dots on the cap and seat...

Ok next question is, If I get the pinion depth wrong and have to pull the bearing off... will I be able to re-press that bearing? Or are they like suspension bushings and can only be pressed once.

Nah, within reason you can push it one and off as you like...

A little bit of heat goes a long way

Thanks for help guys!

When I am measuring the preload on the pinion, does it matter if the bearings are dry or have oil? (I am just thinking the oil will effect the measurement)

when i check the preload i had lubed up the bearings with some gear oil and everything came out alright for me.
