Is Convertible Top a DIY project?

I have a Black 97 GT Convertible with the top showing wear in the usual places. I'm considering replacing the top myself given the stiff price quotes I've received from local shops ($1000 +). Can anyone give me details of hands-on experiences that might sway my decision?

Thanks.

Damn $1000 plus[:-], did that include the top and glass. I am thinking about doing it myself but a nice cavas top and rear glass cost about $500.

we replaced the top on my 94 vert ourselves. We got all the supplies(top, glass window, and headliner) all for about $500. We had the car in our shop for 9 days, working on it about 4-5 hours a night. We had to take it off and put it back on 3 or 4 times to get all the wrinkles out of it. It looked good in the end, but i wouldnt replace another one myself. Unless you have at least 2 people, a garage to work in, and alot of patience, then I would recommend shopping around for a better price(we were quoted $700 parts and labor) and getting a shop to do it for you. here are some pics of after we finished.
