Default Stock Block HP limit?

I'm sure this has been asked but how much HP is a stock 4.6 good to? I want to put in a 5.1L stroker kit but not sure if i should just order a short block or not?

Stroke it or buy a whole new engine... good problem to have! : ) The stock block should be alright up to 400, maybe a bit over that. I think if you start playing up in the 450 range on a consistent basis, you may want to mark that page where you're looking to buy the new motor.
Depending on what you're doing with your stroker kit though, you may be able to handle more if you're getting forged internals or things like that. Good luck and have fun!

the stock block? I think the stock block is good for over 450whp, its the internals that go, i think stock blocks are good till foreverish.

The stock "block" can handle just about anything you throw at it... the internals however (rods+pistons) are good to about 450whp..

I'm almost positive that the 2001 GTs, like many of the Mustang GTs are using either the Romeo iron block or the Windsor iron block (determined by the plant assembled). I don't know all the differences, but if I remember correctly the main bearings are not interchangeable.

These iron blocks are basically the same ones as in the 03-04 Cobra. The casting for these blocks were changed in 2006, and so now you have to alter them if you use them in a 03-04 Cobra because the knock sensor locations interfere with the intake manifold.

Anyways, I don't know how much these are capable of withstanding, but you see routinely 900rwhp cars doing just fine. In all reality, it's not the block that'll cause the limits, it's the internals. The cylinder block is the block itself, which is very strong...the "short block" is the cylinder block along with the internals (rods, pistons, crank) which is where limits will apply. Your pistons and rods will probably be the first to go at the 450rwhp point.

That's not a set point either, tuning, abuse, maintenance, and power adders have lot of variables that can screw all that up. Plus, I suppose you could rebuild a car with internals stronger than your block...

There is no difference between how much an engine or valvetrain can handle between Windsor or Romeo.

well that is what i had heard also, around 450... but if i do the stroker kit of course i would do the forged internals... do it right the first time... i was just wondering if the cylinder walls and the stock casting would hold up... i imagine it will without having to be race prepped or any of that stuff....

if your putting a stroker kit in you dont need to worry about the block at all. unless your HP goals have 4 digits youll be fine. i would imagine that you would be getting a new engine as a whole if your planning on making over 1,000 so your fine.

Wow i'm really glad some people came in here and straightened that out cuz I was about to say you're doing REALLY well and youve spent A LOT of money on your 4.6 if you're in the galaxy of breaking the block casting. Going to take way way more than youl ever make most likely.

On a side note.....Anybody ever notice the carolina blue/teal blue markings on the front of their block? When I first got my car I thought I had a windsor because my marking is a "W" but i've seen all kinds of symbols marked in that blue sharpie. Wtf is that?
