Default ABS/Traction control problem

My Abs light is on and my traction control off button is illuminated. My buddy tried scanning it for me and he couldn't get his scanner to read the brake system. He said he's never had one that he couldn't read before. I've checked the fuses and they seem good. Any ideas?

The ABS module has it's own ecu that can't be read by your friends scanner. You're stuck taking it into a shop to have the code read.

would I have to take it to a dealer? He has a pretty nice snap-on scanner. He could get to the part to where it was supposed to read the ABS codes but it was comming up with an error like it wasn't communicating. Would this be a sign a a bad ECU for the ABS?
