Default tach problem

Hi, I have a 1996 mustang gt 5 speed. The car has 87,000 miles and is all stock except for an o/r h pipe.. Everything works great except the TACH. The tach used to work once in a while, but was pretty jumpy. Now the tach needle is stuck on the other side of the tach needle stopper thing.. When I get to high rpms, I dont know how high bc it doesnt work, the tach needle will start to go backwards...any ideas as to what it is?

*Disclaimer*Do not try this at home, I am a proffesional. YOU WILL GET HURT!
(After i read my post i felt the need to add a disclaimer, i know..Silly)

I don't know if you have aftermarket gauges or maybe someone re-installed the factory gauges(I did, and used my white's on my next stang), And they were installed poorly. Either way, Its a piece of cake removing your gauge cluster. Ask anyone who has installed white faced. Infact Years ago (2001 i think) i used this awesome forum for "how to". If you cant find a how to, im sure you can figure it out or just Mess. me and ill type something up(American Muscle offer install how-to's on just about everything. *****Be sure and use a standard kitchen fork to remove the needles! thats key, very easy to bend(That might be the problem). Have it completely removed and just plugged in, and I went for a spin on a REMOTE ROAD. Followed a friend that is set on a 15-25mph cruise control and re-installed my needles(yes, while driving, Remember i said remote! I had someone hold the steering wheel.

This would cost you NOTHING!, opposed to paying for a special tool or bringing it somewhere. If the problem exist then go to the next step, but hey it's free and educational (Fun Too)
