That is something seriously traumatic. Doesn't really sound like a rod to me. Have you checked the exhaust manifolds to make sure there isn't a big *** hole rusted in one? Also do a compression test, it would be rare not to smoke, but that sounds like a seriously cracked piston or a hole through it.

One other thing is the rod cap could have fallen off and that is the crank hitting the rod on every turn. Did you check to make sure the flywheel wasn't broken?

When the car went in to the tranny shop they had the entire clutch/tranny out of it and running, so it couldnt be the flywheel, the car has been in vegas it's whole life, there isnt a rusted piece on it.

Flywheel makes more of a rattle anyway. If I had to call it, I would say a hole in the piston. Doesn't really make much sense without smoke, but that is the closest sound.

Have you tried unplugging an injector one at a time and see if it affects the sound?

How did they start it with the transmission out?

Have you pulled all the plugs yet to look at them? Or done a compression test? Start there before trying to part the thing out.

Was the sparkplug loose or tight, and WTF happened?

The plugs are all tight, figured as long as they are all tight there wouldnt be a major problem there.

They put a mock bell housing on it to start it.

The spark plug was tight. and idk what happened yet, haven't had time to pull the motor out. Hopefully at the most I only have to replace is valve, rocker, and/or piston
