Default tranny - clutch ?

I figured id post this here since theres more traffic...

04 mach1 w/3650 trans. stock clutch. 35 000 miles. intake/tune/exhaust.

Problem: Everything runs and shifts prefectly when driving normaly (slow shifts, under 3500rpms).

As soon as I start driving her harder (5-6k Shifts) and trans is getting hot, gears are really hard to get in especially 3rd/4th. When I try to put it in reverse after some spirited drving I get the car to a stop FULLY press the clutch in and sometimes I cant get it in reverse(some nasty nasty grinding).

Now over the last 2 years of owning the car I have missed 3-4 shifts(3rd gear) so it grinded pretty bad. That probably damaged something.

BTW. I drive the car easy, but it sees a couple of 5500-6000rpms shifts every now and then. What a normal Stang should be doing lol..

what I think...

1- Shift fork from missing 3rd gear a few times and its getting weak when trans is hot.

2- Messed up Synchros...gets worse when hot I guess.

3- Clutch adjustment?? or due for a new clutch...dosent feel like it slipping at all. But feels a little bit weirder since putting 275 tires at the back(cant chirp 2nd or 3rd anymore ) maybe thats just cause of traction with the wider tires now. a bit of chatter when hard shifting 1st-2nd at 6000rpms.

Anyone had that before or know what it could be?

Bet its the syncs, but only way to know is to tear into it. I dont remember if they changed reverse on the 3650's but the t45 dosent have syncs for reverse and causes the same issues you describe with reverse. Going to first then reverse sometimes help along with letting the car roll a little.

lets start easy. when, if ever, have you replaced the tranny fluid and how much did you use? the 3650's came overfilled, thats why alot of people have had certain issues with this tranny.

Drain the tranny and refill with 3.2qts of Mobil 1 ATF. This TSB is listed for the '10 to '03 models, however it holds true for the '04 as well.

The 3.7qt fill recommended in the 2004 owner's manual is too much, and it causes hydrostatic locking of the shift-rods and detents, and makes the tranny run hot, when pushed hard.

In the '05+ manuals Ford lists 3.2qts for the 3650 fill-up.

You can download the owner's manuals here...

ahhh! thanks for the TSB.

I'm still under full warranty for another year(covers everything inside the trans).

Brought it in to Ford last month and they said everything shifts normal(yaaaaa if you drive it like grandma)..so they sent me home with a 75$ bill to have checked the tranny without finding anything abnormal.

Ill go back with the TSB. I probably need that Synchro kit.

As far as I know, maybe depending on whose definition of "full synthetic" you wish to apply--it is what recommended by Tremec...

I had been running RP Synchromax for over 60k miles (2 changes) because I could get it at cost from a friend in Daytona--however the recession pushed him out of business so I got the M1 at Autozone.

Here's the part the RP fans won't like, the tranny shifts smoother than it ever did with the RP--that little "hitch" between 1st and the neutral gate is almost gone and 2nd to 3rd is so smooth I often don't realise Ive just shifted...
