4.10's too much for vortech?
 

Well as the title shows, are 4.10's too steep for a vortech car? I had the gears purchased years ago and never got around to putting them in, and now that I'm blown I want them installed. I've just been reading and I am worried that they may be too steep. What do you all think is best for a good mix?

honestly any more than 3.55's is probably too much. im runnin 3.73's w/ turbo, and i cant get traction in first at all.

i say sell the 4.10's, get a intercooler, up that boost to 9 psi, and keep them 3.27's

well it depends on how much power you got to the wheels. With my vortech and 4.10s I have 370 rwhp and 420 rwhp and gearing was nice. Once I moved to 470 rwhp had traction problems plus continuouly running out of gear. Unless you have drag radials you are going to have to feather 1st gear regardless what gear you go with.

I had sub-frames and stock lower control arms with 4.10s at 370 rwhp. When I moved to 4.20 rwhp i added uca's with street summer tires KDWs traction wasn't too bad. Car pulled like a beast.

Turbo setups are totally different animal.

I love my 3.55 gears for my current setup and 470 rwhp it doesn't pull as hard a 4.10 with less power.

yea, depends on how you plan on driving the car too. i just couldnt imagine any car with boost runnin more than a 3.73 unless its a pure all out drag car with an auto. there's just so little gear.

if you plan on DD'ing the car with any highway driving, i'd suggest against 4.10's. tho - if you do install em - lemme know, i need some 3.27's lol --
EDIT: o wait, i see in your sig you have a 96, didnt earlier year stangs come with a retarded gear ratio like 2.73's?

4.10's are too much IMO. I eat through the gears, and 1st is basically worthless. I put them in before I went SC, and they were great. However, if I had it to do over again, I'd definitely go with 3.73's or 3.90's if I knew I was going to SC.

ok thanks for the info guys. I think I will sell them and get 3.73's or swap or something. I have to get underneath and check to see for sure which gears I already have in the car because it seems to be high rpm for the speed as it is. I cant remember off the top of my head but I'll check and see. Maybe the person before me already put gears in and im unaware.

I plan on running my setup with my 4.10s but i have slicks for the traction issue.

im not too worried about the traction, that can be "fixed" im worried about going through the traps at a weird rpm and not maximizing anything.

I have 4:10's with my Vortech making 482/410 and I love them .....

4.10s + power = sex

If you set the car up with the right suspension and tires, there shouldn't be traction issues. As for running out of gear in the traps, it depends on how much power you are making.

If you are below 450rwhp, you will probably be fine with a 26" tire since you can wind 4th gear with a 26" tire and 4.10s to over 115mph.

If you are trapping much higher than that, then go with a 28" tire
