Default 1st time Mustang GT owner needs advice.

I recently purchased a 2002 Mustang GT, and couldn't be happier with the purchase. I want to start tinkering with it a bit to get a little more power. I'm looking into Cold Air Intakes and High Flow Exhausts as I'm told this is a good starting place. My questions are in regards to performance chips.

Is it worth it to get a moded chip?
Does it really increase the performance the way some people say it does?

Here's the catch, this is an everyday driver for me so I want to make sure that I get more power but can't afford to do it at 10MPG. My main goal is to make sure that anytime I see or hear an annoying sounding import that I can leave them inhaling pure american muscle exhaust.

If you want to improve your car without loosing gas mileage I would suggest a CAI, catback exhaust, SCT2 programmer, and maybe 3.73 to 4.10 gears.

i am in the same shoes you are but instead of adding things to my engine now i have decided to buy another block and build my own. but to answer your question i have heard good things about chips one i hear a lot about is the Diablo's they say they are very good. as far as the power issue, the way i see it as long as it adds some its more than what i have now i dont think it should hurt you gas mileage to bad either

I like you already. And you can accomplish that goal with SLP Catback coupled with a Magnaflow X-pipe.

You can thank me later.

Get the SCT2 programmer and some gears with a nice exhaust, maybe magnaflow x or h pipe with a magnapack cat back. A cold air intake wouldn't hurt and maybe a throttle body and plenum to increase the breathing even further. Don't get a chip tuned by a company that never saw your car, either do a dyno tune which really isn't what's best for a small amount of mods or get a tuner. That way you tune the car just how you want it. You can also tune for gear changes and alot of other cool stuff.

Everyone has there opinion on modding and so forth, and like me go for the easy stuff first.Cai(demolet or other fendermount kit with no metal tubing $125-200),exhaust(catback $350 and midpipe $375(cats) ($200 no cats) ,headers will more than likely require professional installation unless you have the right tools and a lot a cuss words in your vocab. 400-500 install+headers),programmer (predator or xcal2, chips have to be mounted on the computer plus rubbing the contacts on the comp which I did not feel comfy doing, plus the hand helds are so much more versatile $400), Gears should probably be first although I have not got mine yet but coming very soon (375-475 gears/install). Or you can skip this and save for a supercharger $3500+install and dyno tune. And then finally there is the nitrous which Im not a fan of, but lots of folks are $? Oh yeah you can get inside the motor cams, heads, pistons, etc but that gets pricey too. I just suggest doing a lot of research and go for what you want. Hope this helps. Horsepower and torque dont come cheap.
