The only real way to check a battery is under load, ideally at 1/2 the CCA (Cold Cranking Amperage) rating or 3 times the A/h rating. A voltmeter reading will not detect a weak cell because not enough load is applied.
HF has one tester that's better than a voltmeter but not perfect, and one that can really wring out a battery.
Weak cells can seem to work fine one moment, and miserably fail the next--see if there's an auto electric shop that can really test the battery before you spend money on other things.

Well, if the battery doesn't have a shorted cell, you may have a failing ignition switch, or a highly resistive corrosion build up in the ground wire for your battery. Have you tried a jumper cable from the battery the engine ground point (in place of the ground wire since you mentioned removing it repeatedly)?? When you turn the key can you hear a single click?
