As to the actual temperatures all I know is that straight up is about 210°F, and one "needle width" to the left is 190°F or so. The gauge display is non-linear, meaning that as the coolant temperature moves further outside of the normal range the needle swings faster.

This is a good thing as it will draw your attention to an abnormal situation (as your OEM gauge did) faster than would a conventional linear display--see what I mean about "it ain't broke"...

Here's the sensor output voltage and resistance for various temperatures:

I t would be simple enough to use a resistance substitution box in place of the sensor to calibrate the gauge--maybe I'll add that to my "to do" list...
What would cause it to over cool in the mornings or anytime really when its been sitting long enough to cool off completly. Its stays right at the O until you hit the first stop light. (then it goes straight up and down pretty quick,is that where it should run with the 180 thermostate?

I have assumed through this discussion that the fan is coming on as it should (at low speed at 214°F, and high speed at 228°F, and always when the AC is on and the car is traveling less than 30mph)--is this so?

Always come on with the ac on, and come on when it gets a lilttle past the half way mark.

I did the pi intake swap and every since then i have been having this problem. the only thing that concerns me is the xtra coolant temp sensor that i had to tap into the new intake didnt seem to go down into it very well. The one on the drivers side only shows 2 or 3 theards and the one that i taped shows about 5 but i could feel it poke through the other side of the intake, i thought maybe i didnt get in down in there good and it wasnt reading right. are the coolant passages complety full with the engine running?
