Default Steering Rack Bushings

Today my steering gained some major slop due to the fact that for some reason my rack no longer has bushings. I am about try to pick some up, but I tryed to loosen up the bolts that secure the rack to the car and it would not budge. Are there some tips or tricks that will make it easier to get the hardware undone?

They are pretty tight, torqued to 52lbft on installation, a longish breaker bar is needed--here's some info on getting the brackets out once you get the bolts loose...

Ummmm how in the hell do your bushings just disapear? Why would somebody even take them out? Either way you definitely need them. Its a little anoying but you have to get a wrench on the back side of that bolt on the other side of the K member. When I trimmed my tube brackets back I forgot the wrench on the backside bolt behind the K member(the passenger side one). And you know how I realized this? Weeks later when I did my J-MOD installation I was looking for a particular wrench that I hadnt seen since I fixed my steering rack. The damn wrench was STILL there because of the tight fit it was still wedged there I was oh there it is haha.

If they get saturated with engine oil and other crap they can disintegrate and rot right out--I have seen this on the drivers side of high mileage cars where the "Jiffy-Lube/Wal-Mart" crowd have allowed engine oil to pour all over the bushings while changing the filter...

I have a simple and cheap way that I prevent this . Its called newspaper. You take a whole section and kind of fold it in a U shape and make a little tunnel/slide for the oil to flow right down into the pan from where the oil filter screws on. Really clean and easy way to handle things.

To be honest guys I do not know if they just wore away or maybe the previous owner took them out and replaced them. But there was a rubber residue left behind so im guessing they disintegrated. But regardless I went to Auto Zone, picked up the last pair of bushings, a breaker bar and a 18 mm socket for like 40 big ones and replaced it by myself.

Thanks for the help guys!

I use heavy duty tinfoil (aluminum foil for you whippersnappers)...

But believe me--the Jiffy-lube guys just let it dribble where it may...

WhipperSnappers :-)

40 "big ones" is 40 $100 bills = $4000; you're talking about 40 little ones...

Haha I just always refer to a dollar as a big one jokingly to make it sound like it was expensive. But if I had went to a shop it would have costed a good chunk of change
