New Clutch Cable for '98 GT
 

Ok so the clutch in my 1998 GT Convertible is a little funky. It disengages the gears fine, but you have to put the clutch to the floor to get it to disengage them. We think it might have a performance clutch on it, because the guy who owned it a while back replaced the clutch, and he was a performance guy. He put a performance exhaust on it too.

So the Clutch is harder to push down than the normal clutch, but that's not my problem. The problem is obviously the clutch not disengaging until it's at the floor. So we decided our best bet is to get a new clutch cable.

But we have another problem, we dont know which clutch cable to get. I personally wanted to just get the OEM cable directly from Ford. But we also weren't sure if getting an aftermarket adjustable clutch cable would be a better idea.

So which clutch cable would be my best bet?

do you have a firewall adjuster and an aftermarket quadrant? he might just have it poorly adjusted.

Sounds like it's just not adjusted correctly.

^+1, there should be 1" to 1-1/4" (no more than 1-1/2") free play in the pedal...

The clutch cable in mine isnt adjustable, I am not sure what the clutch was replaced with so I have no idea if the quadrant is aftermarket

What you need to do is look at it, if it's plastic and has one hook then it's OEM-if not then it's after market...

Why does it matter if the quadrant is aftermarket?

^^Plastic factory one sucks. Bad.

Hmm, ok, so where do I look to see if it's factory? and Also, my Mustang makes a noise when the clutch isnt pressed, but it stops if I push it in a little bit. I think I have a bad throwout bearing.

And today I am going out and getting some parts, which clutch cable should I buy?

The factory clutch control mechanism is adjustable, download the 1998 owners manual here, look at page 135...
