If it's a K&N or K&N type oiled filter they say you should clean and "recharge" it every 10 to 12k miles IIRC.
They have cleaning kit, however you can use any dish washing liquid (and water o course) to clean it (avoid the stronger de-greasing cleaners like Purple Power), and then when it's dry use ATF to oil it lightly--and old but sturdy spray bottle works well...
