Default Speedo Off

My speedo is waaay off. I just bought the car about three weeks ago. Its an 04 gt. When the speedo says 40 Im actually doing 50, it says 70, Im doing 90. Im wondering why it may be off and what I can do to have it fixed.

The previous owner may have put new, steeper gears in the car. You don't happen to know the final drive ratio, do you? (stock is 3.27)

Umm....something doesnt add up here.

If you are doing 50 mph(actual) and your speedo says 40mph...that means your car thinks you have a lower final drive than you actually have. IE, your car thinks you have 4.10's, but you actually have 3.27's...

Now, if you simply worded this wrong, and you meant to say that the vehicle is traveling 40mph but the speedo says 50mph, that you likely have 4.10s out back. A tuner can correct this.

Cool i'm right off of the 264 bypass just east of Raleigh in K-dale. I'm a lifetime state fan . I'll be going to a few football games this year. You move here for school from somewhere else?

Don't know any meets in specific but there's a regional section for NC on these forums. An AWESOME local forum is www.horsepowerjunkies.com its not mustang specific though its for the Triangle area but lots of fast cars on there and good local information.

Dont want to hi-jack, i'll take it to whispers from here.

Oh ok so not too far off then. I moved from Charlotte for school - I'll check out hpjunkies. I've been missing my Cars and Coffee that happens in Charlotte every week.

It has 3.27 gears in it. I didnt word it wrong. It reads way slower than what Im actually doing. I bought it from a car dealership and they didnt even know the speed was off.... supposedly.

Getting a tuner would probably be your best bet on fixing this thing (and gaining some horses). A shop by me quoted me $250 to recalibrate my speedo - when a handheld is $370 and a chip is $280.

Well like I said. I just got the car. I dont know alot about mustangs. Ive got a few friends who think the car may have already had a programmer used on it because the service engine light isnt on and I have no cats and it doesnt bang out till 6800. Found that out by accident lol.

Im starting to wonder if the gears was changed at one point. You can tell the rear end has been into before.
