Youll be fine with it , it sounds like it just has a bigger lip. Possibly the difference between the OEM bearing they made at the time of production to the ford racing one they make now.

Your first/top picture is the pilot bearing that I am familiar with. It looks like the proper part for your car. The one from AM looks just like it. http://www.americanmuscle.com/clutchitems.html Your replacement pilot bearing should fit exactly the same as the original one you took out. The inner and outer diameters of the replacement part should be exactly the same as those of the original part. The part you're holding in the second/bottom picture doesn't appear to have any bearings in it. It looks more like a pilot bushing or a pilot bearing that has seperated from its inner roller bearings.

Neither have bearings because I installed the second and when I removed it because it didnt fit the bearing came out. The one that came out is identical to the one on AM for the 5.0 and the one I removed, the one on the second is identical to the one listed on AM for my car and the one Ford says is for it

I understand what you are saying and I agree with uberstang1. As long as the bearing fits flush, it should be fine. Don't worry about the extra thickness of the bearing lip. If your still uneasy, see if you can get one of each (5.0 and 4.6) pilot bearings from a local parts store. Test fit each bearing on your transmission shaft. There shouldn't be any play in the bearing and the shaft. If one fits perfect and the other has play, then you know whats up. Keep the one that fits and return the other.

It's not as much being uneasy as it is just wanting to know why its supposed to sit flush with the crank and it doesnt. They both do go the same distance back into the crank but one sticks out in front and one doesnt. Thanks for all the help

If they both go in the same amount of distance and one just sticks out because of a larger lip it probably simply means thats how it is. The new lip is thicker, and the reason the new bearing wont go in any farther is probably because its already in all the way. The pilot bearing doesnt "need" to see flush with the crankshaft as long as it is in all the way. I just did a clutch in my car about a year and a half ago but can't remember what my pilot bearing looked like installed. If you're looking for something else I read in MMFF about a bushing that Ram makes to replace the pilot bearing, its was a kevlar/nylon construction and supposed to be superior compared the a standard piliot bearing.
