What effect will these tires make?
I have a 2000 Mustang GT supercharged with 400hp to the ground. Right now I have 18 inch saleen rims with 265/35/18 tires all the way around.. I am switching to the new 20 inch saleen rims and putting 255/30/20 in the front and 285/30/20 in the back. My car is lowered about 1.5 inch.. What effect will these 20's have on my car? Like will the 285 rear tire plus 20 inch wheel give me better take off out the hole with out spinning (on the street). And will it take away from my HP to the ground or my top end? Right now my 18's spin like crap first thru third gear and it's annoying not gettin my power to the ground. Any help is appreciated.. My new rims and tires on the way.

none of the above. the width of the tire itself is a very small portion of the issue with traction. the composition (how soft the rubber is) and type of tire (street radial vers an all weather tire) are what will make more of an impact than going with a tire thats 1/2" wider.
do you have any suspension mods either.

They will make your car look like a total "ghetto sled"; but beyond that, if you think the "18's spin like crap first thru third gear "--you ain't seen nothing yet...

20's look retarded on our cars. Plus if you've got 18 by 10 inch saleens you should probably get some wider tires anyways.
Oh and the ride will be worse because of the lower profile tire.
If you spin alot just get some stickier tires.
Pretty simple.

The larger the diameter of the wheel is, the slower it is getting out of the hole. The smaller the diameter, the quicker out of the hole. Just like the sprockets on a 10 speed bike.Larger diameter wheels will keep you going at high speeds better than small ones.
And oh yeah, 20's do look retarded on Mustangs(unless it's painted metalflake purple).

Going with a larger wheel will enhance the problem, not lessen it. Like said above, the width is a very small amount of what makes a tire grip. Compound and sidewall two factors that I think many will argue are pretty significant. That's why people switch to a 15" wheel to race, and sometimes even go with a taller tire. If you're spinning with 18's, get a better tire and maybe drop down to 17's, but definitely not go up to 20's. You're going in the opposite direction of the answer.

I had the early 2000 model saleen style rims in a 20" on my old 1997 Cobra that I had.. I thought they looked damn good.. Im not sure how to put the picture up. On the Cobra they did seem to keep me from fish tailing all over the road when i slam 2nd and 3rd.. The coming off the line in first gear was the same though.
