They probably did the springs with the heads on. Pull out the sparkplug and put compressed air into the hole to hold the valves up, and then used either the OTC tool to compress the springs, or the one that bolts to the head with a bar across to compress it. It's not a bad way to do it, I just find it easier with the heads off. But there's no point in removing the head, that's so much more work to just change springs.

wouldnt they have to pull the heads to do that? they dont pull the heads for a cam install.

the bumper i would absolutely not pay a F***ING dime for, thats rediculous for them to tell you that you need to pay to replace the bumper because they were careless. they have insurance and stuff to cover their techs driving your car, thats why you are not allowed to drive your car in or out of the shop.

the valve, i don't know what all is involved and what they should have done on the install, but if its their fault i wouldnt pay a dime on that either obviously. but cliff noting everyone elses responses it sounds like it could have been the shops fault or a fluke. without further investigation on what they did, were supposed to do (if they skipped steps, then yes you have a case), and what could have caused it i dunno. and besides, something like a cam install may or may not even be covered under any sort of warranty as shop policy. thats why you have to sign a no fault waiver when you go to the dyno cuz they will not guarantee your car to survive it.

Im sorry to hear that you are in the situation ur in that sucks man. Did they pull the heads off when doing the cams? If they didnt pull the heads they couldnt possibly tell it had a bent valve in it but again who knows how far the cams were degreed. When I installed my comp cams in my car I never degreed them either on mine or my buddys cars and they work flawlessly.

no they left the heads on when they did the cams. It seems odd that only 1 valve got bent, which kind of makes me believe it wasnt their doing. they were degreed and then only one valve had issues. if it was install error on cams or degreeing they would all of hit the piston. when they pulled the head to look at it, there was only a mark on 1 piston, the one that was under the bent valve.

well hopfully that everything will be golden after all this is done. but now that they didnt pull the heads then i can see that they would have never seen that you had a bent valve.

oh ok well i would have been raising holy hell if they tried to get me to pay to fix the bumper. **** happens but atleast they are covering that.

if only one valve smacked a piston is it possible that something was wrong with the cam on that lobe? like not ground properly?

That doesn't seem very likely, but I guess anything is possible.

Every month or two I get a call from someone that installs the cams first then prys the rockers in with a screwdriver or whatever. The phone call usually starts with "we have a sticking valve that appears to be bent on the top" and ends with with me saying "I didn't hammer in a bent valve when I assembled the heads so guess who caused the problem"

If you have to hammer the valve out of the guide because its bent on the spring side somebody pried on it a but too much.
