Default Auto Transmission Leaks

Hello,

My 98 Mustang GT has a leak somewhere in the auto transmission. I have not peered under yet to locate the issue but I have noticed the transmission has wet spots. I understand that their is a transmission gasket located where the transmission filter is. I know if that is the problem it should be easy. However, what other seals or gaskets could be the problem? Can anyone point me to the how to guides on how to fix any other seals that my be leaking where I have to drop the trans?

Main culprits of transmission leaks are the input shaft seal (behind the torque converter and inside the bellhousing), output shaft seal (where the driveshaft goes into the back of the trans) and the pan gasket (you know, where the pan is LOL). Trans fluid can also leak from other places such as cooler line fittings, but are much less common. I'd get under the car and see if you can tell where it is coming from.

sorry to hijack, I am having the same problem too on my auto...if the input shaft seal is the area of leaking, how would you fix that? Do you need just a replacement seal or is this just very bad?

Input shaft seal is a cheap/easy fix except for the trans needing to come out of the car. If you do it yourself, it will be very cheap. Take it to a shop and you will have to pay the labor to pull the trans.

Thanks for the quick answer! I pulled a trans out of a 89 GT about 10 years ago but that has been obviously forever ago. Can anyone tell me the process I need to follow when dropping my automatic transmission out of my 98 mustang gt or point me to a diy guide?

Oh yeah, is there any risks of the car rolling off the ramps when breaking the trans loose or is the emergency brake sufficient?

It's fairly straight forward...

1. drain the transmission and cooling lines
2. remove the Mid-pipe
3. remove the driveshaft
4. disconnect the harness connections to the transmission
5. disconnect the shifter linkage
6. remove the torque converter access panel and unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate
7. place a jack under the transmission to support the weight and remove the cross member bolts attaching the rear of the trans to the car
8. unbolt the transmission from the rear of the engine and slide the transmission towards the back of the car
9. slowly lower the trans using the floor jack

installing the trans is the same basic steps just in reverse. This can all be done on jack stands under the front of the car raised all the way and the rear of the car raised a little bit will also help. Make sure to do it on level ground and place your jack stands on the frame or jacking points and you won't have any problems with the car rolling off or anything like that.

The mid-pipe is the section of exhaust between the exhaust manifolds/headers and the catback (the section of exhaust containing the mufflers and tailpipes)

I had to deal with couple of leaks of my own. Where is the leak coming from? The pan area or the rear seal? Both are very easy to change if you need help PMN me.

I really hope so. LOL I haven't located the leak yet but I will be getting under the car today to check it out. Thanks for offering help! I may just take you up on that. Can you tell me if I put the car on ramps if there is a risks of the car rolling after disconnecting the trans? Or will the emergency brake stop that?
