Tuner VS. Chip
 

Got some money for my 04 Mustang GT and wanna chip or tune it any suggestions on which one or which brand. It's an auto. if that makes any difference. Comments are much appreciated.

chip is just something you get ONE tune saved to (unless you get a multi tune chip).

tuner is much better. you having an auto, you can load a 93 octane tune, change your shift points and shift firmness, and call it a day.

I would get a tuner. By the time you get the bezel needed to switch between tunes on chip (assuming you can get multiple tunes on it), you only need to fork over an extra $60 or $70 to get a tuner which can also diagnose any CEL codes.

I'll say something for the chip (got a SCT chip myself). Really a chip is only good for if you wanna change tunes on the fly. Good for people who don't want the hassle of a handheld & only have a few mods (imo). Or has there car pretty much they way they like it and don't plan on changing too much. Its great for, "if your driving your car to the track." Use the street tune there & they flip over with a twist of a knob to the race tune, race, and then change it back. There's no loading up tunes or going thru apps like on the handheld device. I got mine from AM, 4 bank chip. ATM: I have a 87 octune tune, 91 octune tune, 93 octune tune, and a custome tune. Then it has to extra setting you can flip on. It basically kills your car (unable for anyone to start you car). Unless they know about the chip & then flip it off. So an extra security feature which is nice, if your in a shady part of town or whatever. But theres some draw backs as well. Like if you add mods you have to send it back in (for fee) to BAMA tunes to get re-burned. Its kinda a hassle. Then like others before me have said you can change your shift points and shift firmness, clear codes, change you tire size. For me its no big deal because its workly nicely (i too drive an auto) and my car is about as mod'd as i want it to be. But i think with my next mustang and for there after a handheld tuner is by far the way to go. Altho, the chip is neat and more than dummy proof. Its not for everyone.
