There isnt really anywhere to hook up chains without pulling the intake manifold and bolting to the side of the heads. Would definitely be the safest point. I guess you could try using one of the top two bellhousing bolts and one of the bottom two alternator mounting points if the chains reach and are unobstructed.

Why can't you support the engine from underneath by supporting the front of the trans and the oil pan?

Ive using the engine support bar many times, I always hook the chains to the two timing cover bolts underneath and behind the coil packs. There the ones with the 14mm bolt head. Only requires removal of the coilpacks.

when i pulled my motor i used the bellhouseing bolts and i believe the alternator mount but im not 100% sure. I dont see how your going to hook it up with the manifold on though.

The trans is out so theres no where to support the back of the motor.

if the trans is out, then you should be able to use the 2 top trans bolts for the back side.

i used these, with the 2 alternator bolts to pull my motor and trans, but i also had the intake manifold off.

what sort of brace do you have? is it just a single bar that goes across where the hood sits? if you had 2 (or maybe u could use a 2x4 with hooks and a chain) you could use one in back to hold the trans bolts, and another in front to hold it up by the alternator bolts (with the alternator off of corse)

Yeah, if the trans is out, use the top bellhousing bolt holes and the bottom alternator bracket holes.
