Default Replacing rear main seal

I am gonna be getting my clutch done early next week and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to change the rear main seal even if mine isn't currently leaking? I heard modular seals are not known to leak but would it be a good idea to replace it anyway as preventative maintenance since the trans will be out and everything?

What would the best one to go with? Ford? Felpro? silicone, rubber, teflon??

Thanks

The question is...how much will your shop charge to do it? I went with a Ford rear main seal gasket replacement. The cost is the labor with dropping everything. When they already have everything dropped for the clutch you are just looking at parts cost usually. I would say do it. Save yourself the pain of having to try and pull it off later when it does leak. They all do eventually.
How many miles are you at?

Teflon, much more resilient than most other gaskets.

I would never pull a flywheel and not install a new rear seal; unless there were very few miles (<30k) on the engine--one of those "you've git this far so why not" things.

I used FelPro's teflon seal from AdvanceAuto when I did the clutch a while back...

Get the PTFE one, if the one your friend has is the plain rubber seal...

Yeah I was actually looking at the part# on the one he gave me and the one you linked me to and it was different.

Your one:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...S_964192404___

has a description saying PTFE rubber

He one he gave me is this one:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...S_964187891___

And it says rubber, improved design...

Both appearantly work for an 04 GT

So the one I want is the one you linked me to? BS40644?

They should last 250-300K miles before you ever change your rear main seal.
I didn't replace my rear main seal when I installed my Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch
I don't have any problems. What clutch are you having your shop install?
Definitley consider the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch I have one and
it's the best clutch I ever used.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I heard they arent known to leak but since I'm going that far I feel I mightaswell change it. I'm not a very lucky person anyway and the last thing I need is for a $20somedollar seal to be leaking requiring basically a whole clutch job. The reason why I am putting in a new clutch and everything right now is primarily cause my TOB is about to explode (I've been spraying the **** out of it with lube under the car for the past year, but now it's on it's real last leg of life).

I decided on an OEM 03 cobra clutch and a RalcoRZ flywheel...The clutch has already been here collecting dust for over 8 months lol

The one your friend provided is the less expensive "plain" rubber seal, being **** about things like seals that require pulling the tranny and flywheel to replace, I bought the Teflon unit.

It may well be that they "are not known to fail"--though this does make one wonder why Felpro and others make them, and why the FLAPS carry them in the local store stock--seems rather silly of them doesn't it?

250-300k? Where did you come up with this number from? I've seen plenty of leaky rear mains on mod motors with 100kish miles, it may not be a common problem but there not industructable. MMR even make a rear plate kit that doubles the seal up...........
