2000 Mustang GT question
Hi guys, thanks for your help.
Just wondering, I think my upper control arm mount to the body is getting twisted and may need welding. Is this a common problem because of the amount of power that these cars have? Is it a pretty easy fix and would it be pretty expensive?

i wouldnt say its a common problem, do you have stock upper arms or aftermarket?
the rear end suspension in GT's are known to basically... be crap... it uses the 2 upper arms in a triangle pattern, so if you swapped the arms out for harder bushings (like polyurethane or even solid) your creating problems, as the arms create bind in this configuration. obviously the flimsy sheet metal will be the first thing to rip.
if you did have it rip, yes, it will have to be welded. you'll have to get a quote, because not all shops are the same.
if your running stock arms, you'll more than likely just need to replace the arms, or the bushings.

well i dropped my car off with a friend and he had a look and thats what he thinks it is. i'm not sure if its ripped or what not but he said its probably twisted just from the power.
i have the stock mounts. is this a big problem? should i get it fixed immediately?

well i dont see how you would have ripped it with stock power loads, the stock arms have rubber bushings, ford designed them with rubber bushings because they knew the back end creates bind. with everything stock the worse that could happen i could see happening is the bushings go bad. especially since the car is 10 to 11 years old now. if its just the bushings its not too much trouble to replace them.
unless your running aftermarket arms. that's a whole different story.

well i think it may have been because the car got hit by a drunk driver while my car was parked and i think it may have weakened the control arm and the torque must have just ripped it.
is a ripped control arm bad for the car?

thats the beauty of the suspension is that if one arm fails the other acts as a backup.
BUT that doesnt mean u should be driving it that way. it should be considered a limp-mode, and you should fix the problem asap.
if your car was hit, you need to have it thoroughly checked out. you might have other problems.

yeah i'm gonna get it fixed, but its not too urgent cause its winter now and im def not driving that beast in the winter haha. everything on the car is already fixed, just found out about this part. should probably get it welded. shouldn't be toooo costly right?

that depends on whats actually wrong with it. if it needs to be welded, it'll be whatever the shop charges and how they want to do it. for all i know they might want to drop the whole axle or something. i woulnt, im pretty sure i could get in there with my welder to weld it.
