Default Release Bearing going bad?

I have a 2002 GT. I notice that whenever it is idling it makes a VERY faint whirling sound. Sounds almost like a really quiet fan unless i put my ear next to the shifter. The noise goes away whenever i push in the clutch but theres absolutely no noises while i am pushing the clutch in. Also if i am taking off in a higher gear at low rpms... say 3rd gear at 20 mph a quiet rattling whirly sound comes from around the shifter but it goes away as i get above 1600 rpms. I was wondering if it could be the throw out bearing or maybe the shifter is too tight. It has a pro 5.0 short throw and i heard they can cause rattling sounds sometimes. Also the car just had a brand new duralast clutch put in so im not sure if the throw out bearing was greased and that could be causing it. The car pulls fine but the faint sound is a little annoying just knowing its there even though you cant hear it at all with the radio on.

Sounds like a TOB, did you use a "duralast" TOB? Best bet is to is to use a replacement ford TOB regardless of clutch.

My '03 has made that whirring noise since I got it 75k miles ago--it's the transmission mainshaft, and it stops when you depress the clutch because the mainshaft stops turning.

I was initially a bit concerned about it, but found it was a somewhat normal aspect of the 3650 which was not designed to be particularly quiet. It has not gotten worse in those 75k miles, nor has the tranny fluid (changed at 30k and 60k) indicated any abnormal wear--so I stopped worrying about it a couple years back...

I wouldn't worry either. Another thing to check is if they put a gasket on the base of the shifter when it got put in. I've noticed noises seem to be amplified without them also if the inner shift boot is missing or torn trans noise will also be heard

Ok.. I pulled the shifter boot off and noticed it DOES have a gasket under the shifter so thats not it. Also... i noticed there was some red grease like anti rattle grease coated around the base shaft of the handle where it goes up to the top of the tranny. It looks fresh. It was also bolted down with alan bolts and lock washers. Their VERY tight so im not sure if it can be because of that. What gets me is theres anti rattle grease arounf the shaft where it lines up with the tranny. I really dont have any ideas as to what it could be.

When I said inner shift boot this is what I was talking about.

It that is missing I would get that replaced becasue heat and noise will make it's way into the car
