If he got his off of uprproducts.com, it is the $54 one. I remember wanting to do this a couple years ago and thats the shifter I was looking at. It was around $34 back then, they must have raised their prices or it was on sale.

Here's a quick down and dirty. I think it is the $54 one found here, but I got it on sale for like $30. I think it was during their black friday sale. I know they offer discounts to forum members, so you might want to check that out as well.
1. Remove shifter bezel
2. Remove stock shift ****
3. Clip OD switch wiring as close to button as possible and discard stock OD switch
4. Un-bolt, remove, and discard black shifter base.
5. Drill appropriate sized hole for new OD switch in your location of choice
6. Connect OD switch wiring to new switch.
7. Install new leather shift boot on shift lever and shifter trim bezel.
8. Install new OD switch with wiring into shifter bezel (or wherever you are mounting it.
9. Re-install shift bezel
10. Install new shift ****
11. Enjoy your new shifter
You can try to skip over step 4 and just run the leather shift boot in between the black plastic piece on the shifter base itself and the bezel, but I just took mine off.

There are two major pieces to your shifter base. The main component is the aluminum fram that bolts to the trans tunnel/body of the car, ad the second part is the piece that has the park-1st gear designations which is bolted down to the aluminum frame. I would try to get the shift boot to fit with the black plastic piece in place first, and then remove it if necessary.
