Default 99 Mustang GT 4.6 Windsor Engine Swap Help Needed

Hello Everyone . I am in kind of a spot with my wifes 99 Mustang GT..
She was driving up a hill and the engine started knocking and then it died.. I Pulled the motor out and took off the oil pan.. Two pistons were in pieces along with the rods and such... I sure would like to put a engine in it but I am having trouble locating which would properly fit... This is a Windsor engine and I sure would appreciate if some folks can tell me what engine out of which year cars or ? would interchange. I have been told only 1999 and 2000 mustang GT were the only years that would interchange with that Windsor engine and finding one is very difficult at an affordable price....Thank you so very much for any response. Marc

You can transfer over any 94-04 shortblock from a 4.6 mustang including Cobra's. You can also put in a shortblock from a Mark VIII 93-98. If you are just wanting to transfer the longblock you will need to find a 99-04 4.6 2v engine.

I am running across this same problem for my 2000 GT. Everyone I talk to, including a friend of a friend that is a parts manager at a ford dealership, says that it has to be the windsor from a 99 or 2000. Has something to do with the fact that these engines being internally balanced. 01-04 4.6l's are externally balanced, apparently.

My question is, if I am replacing the whole entire engine, what does it matter? Will it not bolt up to the tranny the same? Is the wiring different? The computer?

It sure would be nice if I could really put a romeo engine in place of this dude to the fact that they are cheaper and easier to find.

Kern .. Thank you so very much for your information.. I have just returned home and was late reviewing the posts.. I had been banging my head against the wall trying to find this motor and now you have opened up another field for us and we greatly appreciate it... If I find a 99-O4 mustang 4.6 will the harness or the computer have to be changed? Thank you again.. Marc. and Wife....

If you are replacing the entire engine with another complete engine then it will just swap right in. You can also do just a shortblock from any 99-04 2v and swap over ur heads and intake and be done. No changing of harness or computer needed unless you upgrade to a 4v longblock

just like what everybody said if the heads escaped any damage then just find a short block out of any 94-04 and swap over the heads and such and ur good to go. no need to change any wiring. find a npi block gain alittle hp from the bump in compression. Pistons are shapped alittle differently to lazy to look up the specs

brys00gt... Thank you also for the information.. It sure gives me a better chance in getting this car back on the road... The block that is in it has an 8 hole crank and if I find a Romeo block will I need to change the flywheel ? Thank you again, Marc

I'm Pretty sure you will need to swap the flywheel over if it's not an 8 bolt. You could just take your block to a shop have it cleaned and honed and rebuild the rotating assembly. Either go forged if you plan on adding some sor of fi or just redo it stock.
