Different Octone Tunes
Hey Guys,
I've been viewing over some older threads and not sure if I've what im looking for. Basically my question is: How much rwhp would I be losing running a 87 octane SCT tune vs a 93 SCT octane tune? I think I know my answer but i'd like to hear other's thoughts on this subject please. I really starting to think about this in light of 93 gonna be over 5 prob sometime this summer
Thanks

You will lose enough to make the same $3.00 to $4.50 per tank extra you are paying now worth every penny...
Also, look at it this way--assume 15 gallons. At 3.75 for 87 that's $56.25; at 30¢ more per gallon the 93 would cost $60.75, or 8.0% more.
At $4.75 for 87 and $5.05 for 93 the difference is only 6.3%. If 87 gets up to $6.50 (which some are predicting), and they maintain the same 20¢ to 30¢ per gallon differential then it will only be a 4.6% difference.
The spread would have to be 50¢ per gallon to get back to an 8.0% difference.--and eve then it would be $97.50 for 15 gallons of 87 and $105.00 for 93.
A whopping $7.50 difference. Skip a couple lattes at Starbucks, or a couple long necks after work and you're covered...

Your initial concern was prompted by pricing, so that's where I went...
It is impossible to say with any certainty, however (and depending on the tunes) you will lose 5-10HP peak, and perhaps 7-15HP from the mid-range (3000-4500 rpm) at WOT--that is where you will take the biggest hit because that is where additional spark advance has the most profound effect.
Again, depending on the tunes (are these canned/mail-order tunes?), the loss may be a bit less--or even more...

The difference in a canned "93 octane tune" and a canned "87 octane tune" is typically about 2˚ global which translates to single digit hp gains/losses on our cars in N/A bolt-on trim. If you have a custom tune, you may experience more of a difference.

Wow! If that's the only difference then "canned" tunes suck worse that I thought they did...

Perfect info you nailed it as to what i wanted to know. Very interesting to know that its that small of a margin between the two.... hmmm 93 is kinda sounding like a rip off again lol

The canned tunes are fairly conservative as far as performance goes. You can max the WOT timing advance on a DiabloSport 93 octane tune without pinging as long as there's 93 in the tank for a few more ponies
