Sold Z28 for GT: My Story
Earlier this year I purchased my first sports car. It was a used 2002 Z28 7900 miles automatic plain jane (no power anything). I was surprised at how little power this car had at low rpm. With just a little pressure on the throttle, the off the line acceleration was not more than any other car. It just did not seem like 310 hp. But at 4000 rpm it was a beast, it really woke up. Torque cuve was not at all progressive; it had a hudge peak. This is not in line with the power charts I have seen. AnywayI did not like the blind spots, nor the hump on the passenger floor, nor the Dodge Intrepid looks. After a few thousand miles I sold it and bought a 2003 top of the line GT (Also auto, sorry manual guys). I really perfer the interior design of the GT, and the exterior looks. Call me crazy but the Z28 did not seem like it had 50 hp and 40 ft lb over the GT. The difference in power is at higher rpm, but it is not as much as you would think. Maybe my GT is weird I don't know? Comments? Any one else own or drive a z28? Your views? My Chev friends have never stopped ragging me over this decision, but I am much happier with the Ford. <edited><editID>yellow4.6</editID><editDate>37960.3674768519</editDate></edited>

we are just alike!! on march 11th i purchased the 4th gen Fbody i wanted so badly for 10 years. i had so many problems with that car. i loved the low end power, im suprised you were unimpressed? a girl i dated recently has an 01 Z auto, and itsa torque monster. more than my 4.6. well i ditched the Z, got a GT, and ive been happy every since.<IMG src=smileys/smiley4.gif border="0">welcome to the board, you are among a larger group of friends and enthusiasts.

I have to be fair to Chev.Let me clairify whatI mean by lack of low end power. I am just saying that if you eased on the gas up to 2000 rmp it did not have much bite. Sure crack the gas, reach 4000, and holy s**t. To add to this story the high rpm of the z28 is similar to a 2001 auto vette I drove. But vette's midrange and low end was mind blowing. Enough of Chev I love my Ford. While the 4.6 does not have as much top end power as the 5.7, at least4.6 builds its power more linearly. Maybe the z28 I had was not as powerful as other, maybe my 4.6 is more powerful I can;t say. I never dove any other z28 or GT Stangs other than mine.. Remember both cars were auto.

I own a 3rd gen F-body T/A, albeit not stock, as well as a new GT 5 speed. I really like the stang, and I really like the T/A. I enjoy the driving position of the GT MUCH more than the TA. My T/A has way more head room, however to be fair, my stang is a convertible. They are different.... My T/A is a torque monster, and the stang is great throughout the whole rpm range, but in the high-end, it kinda dies down a little. They each have their own pros, and they each have their own cons. Apples and Oranges. One thing i really don't like about the stang..... THE GAS PEDAL HAS CRAZY STIFF SPRINGS!!!Did ford do this not to encourageus to go too fast? I find the gas pedal feel horrible on the GT. Too stiff, and when the pedal is near the floor, there is a second, even stiffer spring. I will look into changing them very soon! One thing that Ireally like tho... the clutch pedal feel on the GT is way more positive than my hydraulicclutch on the T/A T5. Like I said, they are equallygood in my book in different aspects.</P>

Just my 2 cents<IMG src=smileys/smiley1.gif border="0"></P>

2002 4thgen Z28 Automatics had 2.73 gears, that was why you felt like you had no bottom end grunt.</P>
If you went to the track your Z28 would absolutely violate your GT. You've seen the dyno charts and the LS1 Z28's have an AMAZING flat hp curve. There is nearly the same amount of HP all the way to redline, truly awesome. But with a Camaro or TA, with the stock suspension you could still out handle a modified suspension Mustang. Mustangs simply do not handle on rails like a 3rd or 4thgen Camaro, they are amazing when you bomb a corner doing 80-90mph and the front end just digs into the pavement and you can put that car wherever you want in that corner and stay there...whereas with my Mustang I'm all over the road, tires squeeling and I'm going 25mph slower too <IMG src=smileys/smiley12.gif border="0"><IMG src=smileys/smiley19.gif border="0"></P>
Just like markstang I had an 88 Iroc-z and the thing had so much torque it was incredible, it fell flat on it's face around 4200rpms but it had so much torque I was able to rocket out 4-5 car lengths and fool people like you wouldn't believe. </P>

I agree with Markstang, the mustang power feels flat, but seems to die at higher rpm. I also agree with Dan02gt, the 2.73 rear end must be the reason why the z28 felt slow just off the line. In fact, it is easier to spin the wheels with the gt athan the z28. Again I bet therear end gears are the reason. As Dan said the f body did handle better. But I still like the GT more.
