You have any mods? Could be a number of things. Driveshaft (U joint), gears, etc.

1999 GT Convertible, Automatic.
I have the exact same noise coming from the rear end on my stang too. It is more noticeable as I am accelerating versus coasting. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but I am leaning towards a bad axle bearing. Does anyone have any further thoughts on this? What should I be looking for?

Thanks,
Robert

Just a question, ever change the rear diff fluid?? I changed out the tranny fluid (manual) and rear diff fluid on my car a few weeks ago. My gosh, what a difference it makes! No more high RPM whine and the tranny shifts smooth as the day it did when it was new! The rear diff fluid (80W-90 gear oil) was nasty. It came out all silvery looking and had sludge up teh wazoo from the locking differential wear.

Also let me find the source of my phantom vibration at high speed. Turns out the front U-joint on my driveshaft was going bad and allowed a little play. That's on my list of things to do or have done. Still deciding if I want an Aluminum driveshaft.

Rear Diff oil should be changed out every 60-90K anyway. Start with the basics and go from there. To test for a bad bearing, Jack up the rear of the car (be sure to block the front wheels) and see if you can move the rear tire at all from side-to-side. If you have a bad bearing you will have play.

at 90 K with the way I drive it sometimes, wouldn't suprise me. I figure if I can get another year out of it, I'll be good. The silvery stuff (looks like graphite would look suspended in the gear oil) I know it's metal shavings but i challenge anyone to NOT find that in the rear diff of a car with 90K.
