Default Can someone please help me identify this part

Hi,

Took my stang into the garage for an oil change, asked them to check the front end out for me. When I got home I noticed a leak underneath. You'll see a red circle in the attached picture (not my vehicle) of where the missing 'nut' is. What is this, and what fluid is leaking out? I'm guessing power steering fluid. Does anyone know what the replacement part would be? Thank you kindly in advance for your assistance. 2001 mustang gt convertible.

Thanks,

Funk

Are you sure it is leaking from there. Maybe there is just some oil pooled there from when they pulled off the oil filter.

That is your Rack and pinion. But I'm going to agree with above and say they got oil on it from your oil change. If your worried spray the area with brake cleaner and keep watching to see if fluid still continues to appear in that area

Everytime someone changes the oil on these cars that thing gets filled and soaked with motor oil when you take the oil filter off, most shops aren't gonna go through the hassle of using a plastic bag or form-a-funnel to cover it.

Yeah, I wouldnt worry too much.
Clean it all up and keep an eye on it if you are still worried.

I appreciate the replies, but no one has answered what that bolt is.

The silver bolt/nut that I circled in RED in the picture, is missing on my rack and pinion. Is that a critical component? What can I replace it with?

Ford does not provide a rebuild guide for the steering rack, so I don't know what they call it, however it is the adjuster that fixes the mesh/backlash of the rack and the pinion--it needs to be replaced with the proper part, and be properly adjusted when replaced.
