If it's an auto yes it's worth it. If its a manual, IMO no, not really.

What is it about the automatic transmission that makes the tuner worth the money?

You can change the percentage of the shift points, making your stang feel like it has a shift kit.

Not worth it for your your mods. I love my SCT handheld and the car never leaves home without it.

It's not a huge performance gain. It makes your throttle response a little quicker but you still need to get it because if anything ever goes wrong you can plug it in and get a code. With a code you can find out what the problem is and will save you a lot of time and money instead of a mechanic to tell you and possibly be wrong. You won't regret it.

If you plan on keeping and modding your car and the future it's probably worth it. If it were me I would put the money else where. You'll get more performance gains installing gears than a tuner..

All of the above posts are good. Soldier GT is very much on target.
Since you have a 5spd, the only real benefit you can get from a tuner at this point would be a 93oct tune. You wouldn't notice any difference.
Gears would be very good use of your mod dollars at this point, but then a tuner would be desired to correct the speedometer...
Now is the time to make a long term plan for the car, and decide what you want the car to do before you start with any mods.
GOOD LUCK!

Do the the gears and tuner together and you will feel a pretty big difference.
