My stock 1996 GT has developed a strange misfire. The check engine light is not coming on. It seems to do it at low rpm (anything above idle to 1500 rpm) and at high rpm with half throttle or more. It just misfires for a split second. The only ways I get it do it on demand is by running close to wide open throttle (where it feels like it will miss 4-5 times on the way to redline) and below 1500 rpm in fifth gear (where it will miss 1 or 2 times and then be fine). It will randomly do it in other gears at random rpms.

The car has 172,000 miles on it. I have owned it since 168,000, so I don't know about the car's maintenance history. Anyone have any ideas?

could be a whole book of things id start with a good tune up plugs wires oil change fuel filter change injector cleaner and then go from there...thats a nice amount of miles so its prolly bout due for all that
