Its when you port out the intake and exhaust holes where the valves sit. It provides more area space for more air to enter and exhaust to leave. You will need bigger valves. If you take your car to a performance shop and have them remove and reinstall the heads after the P&P with larger SS valves then it will cost you upwards of $2000-2500. You will see a gain of anywhere from 15-30 hp with stock cams. Your best bet is to throw some bigger cams in the heads and get a good P&P to see some good gains.

Like I said, if you take the car to someone and have it done from start to finish + new valves then it will cost you $2000-2500. If you take a set of bare heads to someone then you are looking at or about $300-500 + the cost of valves.

Does a P+P change the compression of the engine? If so to what?

No. It has no effect on the compression.

you can get a machine shop to grind dow nthe quench pads to lowere comression.

Wouldn't that raise the compression? Smaller combustion chamber closer to the pistons?

you do not need to replace your valves when porting. porting is done to the intake and exhaust ports, wich is where air enters/exits the cylinder head before and after combustion. the valves are not in these ports. the valves are in the combustion chamber. they open and close it to allow air in. shaving the heads will decrease the size of the combustion chamber, therefore increasing compression. but that has nothing to do with porting. you wont see much gain on a stock engine, as the stock heads cams and exhaust won't flow enough to make use of the larger ports.
