Default UH OH, BIG TRANNY PROBLEM!

OK, so I just left my house, and not even a minute out of my driveway, I'm driving down the road, and when I shift into 2nd, the engine revs when I step on the gas like I missed the gear, but I didn't miss it because the shifter is all the way down, so I shifted back into 1st and pulled over. Luckily I was that close to my house, so I just cruised around the block in 1st gear back home and made it OK. Here's the thing...the car is stuck in 1st gear, no matter where I put the shifter. I don't even have reverse. The shifter moves from 1st gear to 2nd gear smoothly without having to have the clutch pedal presseddown, just like it's not attached to the transmission at all. The shifter feels normal when I put it in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse gear positions because I can feel it grabbing, but the car remains in 1st gear. Also, when the shifter is in the neutral position, the car is still in gear, so when you let off the clutch pedal the car dies. On the way back to my house, I put the shifter in the 3rd gear position and 4th gear position, and everytime the car stayed in 1st gear. I have very little experience with transmissions and I have no idea what the problem could be. Does the shifter mechanism have a linkage inside the transmission that could break, resulting in the transmission staying in 1st gear? I just don't know what to make of it because the shifter moves so freely from 1st to 2nd without having to press down on the clutch pedal at all, yet I have to press the pedal to move it into the other gears. PLEASE HELP!!

I'm like you, I have little experience. I haven't heard of any shifter linkage breaking, esp in a manual. It sounds like something internal to me.

I know when the transmission bands in an automatic go out similar problems arise. However I don't know if a manual has the same setup or not. I'd defer to the bloodsucking transmission shop for this one.

All though this link probably won't help with your problem, it does give a nice basic overview of transmission operation. It was informative for me to read anyway.

That's a great website, thanks a bunch! Hey USA, maybe the pivot point for the shifter broke and that's why you can't get out of first?.
