Oil gauge problem

So today i got in my car and i noticed the my oil guage (Lower right hand side) needle was not moving to the middle like it should when i started up the car. If i rev'd it a little the needle would move to where it was suppose to then once the rpm's drop it went back to reading nothing. after about 2-3 mins (Car warmed up) needle went to the middle and stayed there. I'm pretty sure the oil pump is either pumping or not pumping, is this true? Do you think my guage is bad or i'm not getting oil pressure? :icon_wheel:

Thanks,
David

It's more than likely just the sending unit for the "gauge" in the dash....which is really just a dummy light. If it thinks your oil pressure is below 6 it reads no pressure, above 6 and it just goes to somewhere in the normal are. I would recommend an oil pressure gauge (An Autometer electric one). If you just want to replace the sending unit, they are like 9 bucks at your favorite local auto parts store.

+1, just replace the "sender" and take it from there...

How much oil should one expect to pour out of the "senders" hole?

Never pulled one out on an engine with oil in it--it won't be more than 6 quarts...

Seriously though, I would loosen it and take it off slowly (with a catch pan)--if a torrent starts (I don't think it will) then screw it back in quickly. If it's just a dribble then have the new unit at hand an screw it in briskly.

Yeah that was pretty much my plan. Thanks for the advice Cliff.

usually about a half a quart will fall out (contents of the oil filter)

Thanks uber
