"Slushbox" is a less than complementary term from the 60s/70s, applied to automatic transmissions. Way back before electronic controls, lockable converters, and the overall more sophisticated nature of modern automatic transmissions.
Back then we called them that because they were.
Modern "slushboxes" are orders of magnitude better--nonetheless to my geezer ear a V6 auto pretending to be a "performance" vehicle is a horrible thing to listen to, as the poor engine blows it's ***** off trying to make the car sort of go.
Four-banger autos just make me want to puke...
[edit]
Addenda: FWIW; primer slathered Jap 4-banger econoboxes with horribly fitted, tastelessly designed "body kits" flapping in the wind, and slushboxes, and fart cannon mufflers hanging down below the rear bumper, make me alternate between vomiting and laughing my butt off--not a pretty sight at all...

Also, thank you for the history lesson Cliff. Given the fact that I'm 18 the term whippersnapper about sums it up.

manual valve body - best of both worlds lol only problem is that you only go forwards & backwards... no H pattern.. no missed gears tho (with a ratcheting shifter) lol
