Default Heated PCV valve

Trying to track down a slightly rough idle, I've already replaced the IAC, now I'm looking at the PCV. It is one of the expensive heated ones. They run around $35. Is it possible to just replace it with a non-heated twist in PCV's or will this cause problems? My instinct is to get the correct part, but at 10X the cost, I'd prefer one that works almost as well. haha

Well, I'd say if it's meant to have a heated PCV, then it would probably be best to replace it with the same. Just my .02. Maybe Cliffyk, anyone with more knowledge on this, will chime in with a good answer.

The PCV heater is continuously and directly powered though fuse 2.12 (# 12, 2A, in the central junction box), which is hot in start or run, it is the only device powered by that fuse.

It is not controlled by or monitored by the PCM, so the only impact of using a non-heated valve would be the possibility that is could freeze up in cold climates.

Here in Florida that is just a "I wish" dream of a transplanted Yankee like myself, in Indiana YMMV--but I'd go for it. I drove a lot of cars in New England that did not have heated PCV valves--in fact my GT is the first car I've owned that has one...

Cool, I may give it a try then. First I suppose I should pull the pcv and give it the ol' rattle test.

That it rattles just means it is not gummed up, it could still be malfunctioning due to a blocked orifice, weak spring, etc.

How "slightly rough" is the idle? I ask because the '03 and '04 2V's have a slightly "lumpy" idle as a result of slight changes made to the cam overlap and timing in the '03 MY...

Nothing real dramatic, it's enough to make the antenna shake back and forth a bit. Basically it's rough enough that I notice it, because I drive it every day, but not rough enough for any passenger to notice or comment on it.

My old v8 truck had the very same rough idle, but my dad's gigantic Ram 2500 with the hemi idles smooth as silk.

How many miles on it, what mods do you have, when were the plugs last changed and COP boots examined?

~58,000 miles. Changed the plugs about 700 miles ago, boots were examined while changing plugs. Mods include a BBK 70mm TB and a magnaflow exhaust, both done by the previous owner, I haven't had the cash to do any upgrades yet.

Do you know if the MAF screen (between the airbox and the MAF) is still installed? Some remove it believing it to be a restriction (it is not), doing so can cause a rough idle and slight hiccoughs on very light acceleration...

yep, it's there. I saw it when I cleaned the MAF a while back.
